Rare vintage mid-century glass bowl and centerpiece from the 1970s by Holmegaard featuring an exquisite floral design.

Holmegaard Glassworks, a Danish design icon, was founded in 1825 by Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe. The story began when the King of Denmark imposed taxes on imported glass, prompting Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsøe to apply for permission to open a local glass manufacturer. Unfortunately, he passed away before receiving the official permit, which arrived in 1825.
Countess Henriette, at 49 years old, decided to establish the first glass works factory in Denmark on the bogs of Holmegaard. She recognized that the peat from the bogs could be used as fuel for the glass production, demonstrating her practical skills and business acumen.
Initially, Holmegaard produced glass bottles, expanding into tableware in the 1830s. Over the years, the company became renowned for its innovative designs and collaborations with talented designers. The creative trinity of Jacob Bang, Per Lütken, and Michael Bang played a crucial role in bringing Danish glass design to the world stage.
Some of Holmegaard's most iconic designs include Michael Bang's Palet range (1968-1975), Per Lütken's Carnaby glass designs from 1968, and Otto Brauer's Gulvvase design in 1962.
In 2008, facing economic challenges, Holmegaard was acquired by Rosendahl, another Danish design company known for its glass designs. Today, Holmegaard continues to be a significant part of Danish design history, with its products found in many Danish homes and its legacy preserved at Holmegaard Værk, a museum showcasing nearly 200 years of glass art and over 40,000 unique pieces.
