Vintage 1970s plastic wall clock by JAZ. Currently non-functional and in need of servicing.

JAZ was founded in 1919 in France by Ivan Benel and Louis Gustave Brandt, emerging shortly after World War I. The company originally focused on manufacturing mechanical alarm clocks. Its early success was largely due to the high demand for reliable timepieces in post-war France, and it quickly became a household name.

In the 1920s, JAZ introduced its signature bird logo, a "jaseur" (waxwing), which became synonymous with the brand. The company's clocks were known for their elegance, incorporating popular design styles of the era, such as Art Deco, and later transitioning into more modern and functional designs in the post-war era.

Throughout the 20th century, JAZ expanded its product line to include a wide range of timepieces, including wall clocks, mantle clocks, and more. The brand continued to innovate, transitioning from mechanical to quartz movements in the 1970s to keep up with changing technology. Despite the rise of more mass-produced, low-cost clocks, JAZ maintained a reputation for quality and craftsmanship.
