Philips Cocotte ultraviolet lamp, attributed to Louis Kalff, art director of Philips' Lighting Division, and selected by Charlotte Perriand for the 1949 Formes Utiles exhibition in Paris as a benchmark of industrial design, kept in its original unmodified ultraviolet configuration, with original wiring.

This is an ultraviolet lamp, not a standard light source. The B22-D3 socket was designed to accept a UV-emitting bulb that produces ultraviolet radiation rather than visible light. In the postwar decades, domestic UV lamps were prescribed by doctors across Europe as therapeutic devices to promote vitamin D synthesis, treating skin conditions and supporting general wellness during low-sunlight winters. Philips supplied them widely to the residential and medical market. The lamp is kept here in its original unmodified state, with the original reflector and socket intact. It is sold as a collector and display object. Any use of a UV bulb requires prior technical verification by a qualified electrician.

The attribution of this lamp to Charlotte Perriand, repeated widely in the vintage market since a 2005 Centre Pompidou catalogue error, is inaccurate. Perriand did not design it, she curated it. In 1949 she selected the Philips Cocotte for Formes Utiles, an exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs dedicated to objects of genuine utility and considered industrial form. The lamp is attributed to Louis Kalff, who served as art director of Philips' Lighting Division from 1925 to 1960 and exercised direct creative authority over the company's lighting output. Kalff was a trained designer who personally shaped the formal language of Philips' most significant lighting products. Cocotte's resolved economy of material and its wireframe structural logic are entirely consistent with his documented work.
The conical wireframe shade tilts on the pivot joint for directional adjustment. The circular steel base provides stability. Cream powder-coated steel throughout, original cord and plug intact.
