A complementary pair of 1970s West German studio pottery vases featuring a Bay Keramiek handled stoneware jug vase with hand-painted floral decoration, and an unmarked blue, cream and grey tricolor bud vase with a fat lava glaze surface.
Bay Keramiek, founded in Ransbach-Baumbach in the Westerwald region of West Germany, was one of the most prolific producers of studio-influenced stoneware in the postwar decades. The handled jug vase carries the Bay label on the base with sticker, and is decorated with a hand-painted stylised floral motif in soft blue, pink and olive green against a dark brown ground.
The smaller bud vase is unmarked but its tricolor glaze is consistent with the better West German studio production of the same period. The fat lava surface texture gives it a tactile quality that reads well alongside the Bay piece.
