Mitterteich Bavaria porcelain vase from the 1980s with a tulip-cut asymmetric rim and geometric decoration in red, black checkerboard and gold against classic white porcelain.
Mitterteich Bavaria was established in 1887 by Ludwig Lindner in Mitterteich, Bavaria, and operated for over a century producing fine porcelain across a wide range of styles. By the 1980s the factory was responding to the postmodern movement with a new decorative language which was more graphic, geometric, and high-contrast which sat at the opposite end of the spectrum from their known floral and classical patterns.
The decoration occupies one side of the form asymmetrically with a fan-shaped red and black stripes alongside a block of black and gold checkerboard, the two motifs meeting at an angle. The tulip-cut rim with its single raised lip reinforces the sculptural intention.
